What is BPC-157?

BPC-157 is a pentadecapeptide: one chain of 15 amino acids joined by peptide bonds, with no disulfide bridges, branches or modified residues. It is catalogued under CAS 137525-51-0 and PubChem CID 9941957, with the molecular formula C62H98N16O22 and a molecular weight of 1419.5 g/mol.1

The material described on this page is a synthetic peptide intended as a laboratory reagent.

Composition

Four of the 15 residues are proline (positions 3, 4, 5 and 8), including a run of three. The remainder are glycine (3), alanine (2), aspartic acid (2), and one each of glutamic acid, lysine, leucine and valine. Three side chains carry a carboxylic acid group and one carries an amine, so the peptide carries a calculated net charge of about minus two at pH 7.

The sequence contains no cysteine, methionine or tryptophan, the residues most prone to air oxidation in peptides, and no asparagine or glutamine.3

Free peptide and salt forms

The formula and molecular weight above describe the free peptide. Synthetic peptides are often isolated as salts, which adds counter-ion mass. The acetate salt of BPC-157, for example, is registered under a separate CAS number, 1628202-19-6.2 This is why formula weights can differ slightly between suppliers.

Handling

BPC-157 is a dry solid as received in the laboratory. General handling guidance for lyophilized peptides applies.3

  • Allow the sealed container to reach room temperature before opening, so moisture does not condense on the solid.3
  • Keep the solid dry and away from bright light. Moisture lowers long-term stability.3
  • Avoid repeated freezing and thawing.3

Cayman Chemical lists -20 °C as the storage temperature for its solid BPC-157 (acetate).2

How each lot is tested

Each lot is tested by an independent third-party laboratory.4 The BPC-157 certificate page names the testing laboratories and lists each lot's purity, net content and test date. Three measurements are reported.

Identity

Mass spectrometry

Checks that the measured molecular mass matches BPC-157. The calculated monoisotopic mass is 1418.70 Da.1

A matching mass is consistent with the expected composition. It does not confirm the order of residues.

Purity

High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC)

Separates the peptide from synthesis-related impurities. Purity is reported as the main peak's share of the total detected signal.

Reported per lot. The Oasis Labs specification is 99% or greater.

Quantity

Net peptide content

Measures the mass of peptide actually present in the sample tested.

Reported per lot on the Certificate of Analysis.

Technical notes

What does the Certificate of Analysis confirm?

Identity by mass spectrometry, purity by HPLC, and the net peptide content of the sample. Mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass, not the order of residues.

Why do molecular weights for BPC-157 differ slightly between sources?

The figure of 1419.5 g/mol is for the free peptide. Salt forms, such as the acetate, carry extra counter-ion mass and have their own CAS number.

Why is the material freeze-dried?

Peptides are most stable as dry solids. Moisture reduces long-term stability, so the material is lyophilized and kept sealed until use in the laboratory.

Each listed BPC-157 lot has its own certificate covering identity, purity and net peptide content.
